Q&A

Join us as we sit down with Gold Medal Lifestyle founder James to talk about his own personal training routines, his favorite travel destinations, his inspirations in life and his visions for the future ahead among other things.

01

WHO WERE YOUR SPORTING IDOLS & INSPIRATIONS GROWING UP?

Well, coming from a soccer mad country like England, it was hard not to fall in love with the game, my team from a very early age was Manchester United and the ‘superstar player’ at the time was a young Ryan Giggs. I used to play in his position too so tried to emulate him every time I took to the field at school or in the local park with my mates!

Being a massive boxing fan also, I have great admiration for a lot of fighters but none more so than the Filipino legend, Manny Pacquiao. I followed his career from an early stage and loved his style and personality both inside and outside the ring and have been fortunate enough to spend time around him in the last few years. To see how a great champion like that operates and handles himself is a priceless education for anyone really.

02

What was your dream job when you were young?

Soccer Player. No Doubt! That is all i ever did as a kid, play soccer, soccer, soccer every day almost! I reached a semi-professional level, but never really followed it through once I approached my twenties.

I also quite liked the idea of being a fighter pilot! We can all dream right?

03

ON TO FITNESS NOW, WHAT IS YOUR OWN REGULAR PERSONAL ROUTINE?

I try to mix up my training patterns every couple of months depending on my schedule and current location. I also think its important to keep your mind stimulated and your body guessing to see consistent results without stagnating. In more recent times I have been massively into training with Olympic gymnastic rings for example.

I’m always ticking over one way or another but I also like to work in cycles too and usually approach things with a training camp mentality and a target date driven programme, I find it brings out the ‘Eye of the Tiger’ a lot more when you have a goal date or special event to shoot for!

04

YOU’RE ONLY ALOUD FOUR DIFFERENT EXERCISES IN THE WEIGHT ROOM TO BUILD A GREAT PHYSIQUE, WHAT ARE THEY?!

This is a bit like a ‘stranded on a desert island’ question right?

Okay, well… compound exercises are the cornerstone of any great program, especially when time and equipment are at a premium! So on that basis, I’ll go with the incline bench press, military shoulder press, wide grip pull ups and one of my absolute favorite exercises, the deadlift!

These four will hit all the key areas and should give a nice balanced look to your body. When the restrictions are lifted we can sculpt a little more thoroughly haha!

05

AND YOUR TOP TIPS FOR ANYONE WHO’S JUST STARTING OUT AND WANTS TO GET IN GREAT SHAPE?

I think it’s no secret that the foundation of any successful training programme regardless of your current shape or goal is to really pay attention to what goes in your mouth! For anyone starting out, I would recommend you begin tracking what you eat as you may be surprised at just how much (or little!) you’re consuming, regardless of whether they are so-called ‘healthy options’ or not.

Consistency and patience are my other top tips when starting out too. Whatever programme or routine you decide to pursue, be totally consistent with it and above all, be patient! There are no magic buttons on the mirror to give you that dream physique in two or three weeks and this is where a lot of people lose hope very quickly more often than not sadly!

06

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR COACHING STYLE?

First and foremost, working with children when I was coaching soccer made me learn very quickly that every individual is totally unique. I would always try to gauge a person’s personality as quickly as possible to see what buttons I have to push with them to get the maximum results out of their time!

Some people respond better to the ‘arm round the shoulder’ treatment and lots of praise, whereas some tend to slide into a comfort zone if you give away too much and actually raise their levels to greater heights when mentally and emotionally challenged or met with a firmer approach.

One thing that I never compromise on though is the effort. However you approach any task in life, you will always sleep better at night if you know you gave it your best shot! It’s the minimum I would demand from anyone I’m tasked into helping.

07

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

To answer you ironically, I would say the thing I love most is the fact that I don’t consider it as a job! To me it’s a passion, I love to see other people succeed and if I can be the one to help them do so, then there is no better feeling for me.

08

AND YOUR VISIONS FOR THE FUTURE?

I want to continue to grow personally, I’m always trying to add new strings to my bow, learn new methods of training and continue to research deeper when it comes to the ever-changing landscape of nutrition and supplementation. I love to travel a lot too, so hopefully I can cross some new destinations off my list in years to come!

For the Gold Medal Lifestyle, I’m driven in bringing our methods and message to the widest audience possible and wish to open it up to like-minded people to come and be a part of, whether in a professional sense or as a student and participant through our personal training and community/family structure.

09

RIGHT! LETS FIND OUT A LITTLE MORE ABOUT ‘JAMES’ THE PERSON! YOU MENTIONED TRAVELLING, TELL US YOUR FAVORITE DESTINATIONS AND ANY YOU WISH TO GET TO IN THE FUTURE?

Well, let’s get the easy one out of the way firstly… The country I have been to the most and the country I am planning to live in very soon is the Philippines! An amazing country with amazing people and some of earth’s most beautiful beach destinations. I’m a beach bum at heart so the Philippines is ideally suited to me!

Japan is another place I always had ambitions to see, so going to Tokyo in early 2017 was a real bucket list moment for me and a country I definitely want to see a lot more of.

Special mentions to Bali and Las Vegas as two places that stick in the memory for one reason or another and I loved Barcelona as a city break destination.

In the future, I would love to conquer more of South East Asia and possibly Central America!

10

WHAT ARE YOUR GUILTY PLEASURES WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD?!

Wow, now there is a question! Well, we are all allowed a treat now and then right? Okay, so cheesecake, I don’t know why I just go crazy over cheesecake! I don’t care too much for flavors either, just give me a regular New York style one please!

11

WHAT’S ON YOUR iPod, what music do you love listening to?

Music is a mood thing for me! In terms of genre, I listen to pretty much anything from Hip-Hop, House and Indie Rock… right up to Jazz and even Classical!

Music has to be one of life’s true gifts, the world would certainly be a lot duller without it that’s for sure! I always seem to have a pair of headphones on wherever I’m going!

12

AND FINALLY! YOU HAVE FOUR GUESTS TO INVITE TO YOUR DREAM DINNER TABLE FROM ANYONE IN HISTORY?

I’ll start with Winston Churchill, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, full of quotes and inspiration… A great leader and someone I could definitely learn a lot from!

Next would be Marilyn Munroe! Has there been a more iconic and elegant figure in modern times? I’m not sure, but she would certainly add the showbiz to our occasion!

We would have to have a story-teller and someone to keep things nice and lively too and having read the autobiography of Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones a few years back, I’m sure we wouldn’t be stuck for laughs!

And finally, well… as I mentioned right at the start, Manny Pacquiao is someone I greatly admire, so he would always have a spot at my dinner table!
